Struggling in your Personal Time with God? 4 Ways to Overcome

4 September 2017 | By Ruta Miller

Have you ever found it difficult to sustain something you have started. I have always wanted to live a
healthy life, by eating right and exercising. Headstrong and motivated I start, but fail to keep it going for long. In desperation, I have tried many different plans and creative ways but all in vain.

Similarly, I have struggled at being consistent with reading the Bible daily and praying. The Bible says, this should be a part of a Christian walk (Joshua1:8). No matter what plan I would come up with, I could never do it in my own strength. I was left feeling… Guilty ! Guilty ! Guilty !

If this has been your struggle, read on friend…

→ Where is the Focus – “Do not love the world or the things of the world” (1 John 2:15a) If your mind is occupied by the cares of the world, which is you are constantly thinking about your job, children, school, loans, dinner etc. Check your self, this is an indication that the love of the worldly things is more than the love of God.

→ Where is the Love – I remember watching a movie, in the beginning the leading lady had no feelings towards the man, in the end when she realizes how much she is loved, her heart changes for him. The key here is, it’s not her love, but the love she receives.
If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15b). This scripture really blew my mind, it says “the love OF the Father” and not “the love FOR the father”, which means it’s not about your love but HIS LOVE.
I believe If you are engrossed in the world, you have not understood the love OF the Father; because once you understand the love OF the Father all chains will break loose.
It’s God’s love that will change your heart, not your love. (1 John 4:19)

→ Where are you Investing – My husband and I have picked up many investment plans to secure the future of our family, which is good and am all for it. However we must also invest in our spiritual growth, “Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing” (Luke 12:23). God invested His only Son, so that we have an everlasting life (John 3:16); Jesus invested His life on the cross so we are forgiven of our sin (John 15:13). Because God has invested in you, this knowledge of His love, will make you want to invest time to know about God’s love. Meditate on scriptures, read books, listen to audio messages that reveal God’s love for you.

→ What is your motivation (Chore or Love) – When we try to set a goal (daily prayer and Bible reading) in our own strength, because love is missing, it becomes a daily chore. That is why we fail over and over again. Feed on his love and you will fall head over heels in love with him. Let your motivation be God’s love and not your own knowledge.

I truly believe with experience, after this you will find victory in spending time with God. So my dearest, be no longer condemned or guilty; for His grace is sufficient for you and His strength is made perfect in your weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:9)
